9.16.12 Worship Rewind

  • Unchanging – Chris Tomlin
  • Here For You – Matt Redman
  • The Wondrous Cross – Chris Tomlin
  • New Doxology – Gateway Worship

What an awesome day it was at Xtreme. The place was packed,  music was tight, hands raised all over the pace (which is cool to see), great team huddle with all the church leaders afterwards, visitors and more visitors.

Last week I started having throat issues. I wasn’t sure what it was but my throat really started to hurt bad. Singing only made it worse. I doctored it with Organic Throat Coat tea and spoke as little as possible and absolutely no singing which meant I called off our Wednesday rehearsal. With rehearsal being called off that meant we only had one practice an hour before first service. We we’re also doing two songs we haven’t done in a long time and musicians for this Sunday had never played them. This made for an interesting attempt.

Let me just say that considering the newness of musicians and songs and one rehearsal, THE WORSHIP MUSIC SOUNDED AhhhMAZING!!! The band, I don’t think, had not sounded any tighter. We flowed with the spirit, everybody was right on key and the God just moved through the place. It was one of those moments that the planets were lined for everything to go wrong and everything went right. I can’t express how beautiful the spirit was in church and just seeing everyone worship was simply amazing.

Unchanging sounded really good to my ears as a guitarist. Guitarists are always looking for that perfect tone kinda like the Holy Grail of tone. For some reason this morning my ears were hearing a beautiful sound coming out of my amp. Our BGVs Jayce was top-notch on singing some great harmonies too.

We brought Here For You in last week and our church really liked it. They were all about some worshiping with it today. Hands raised, lost in worship this morning. It was so great to see so many people worshiping like that. I thought I was in another church. (Note To Self: get the drummer some glue for sticky hands. lol)

The Wondrous Cross was so beautiful this morning. It’s been a while since we’ve played this song. Our bass player Tony was doing some really good stuff and the drummer Thomas was feeling it and we were all just playing in the same spirit. Today felt like we all had been playing together for a long time and just knew what to do and when to do it. That’s priceless right there.

Lastly we went into New Doxology. I never asked where the keyboardist Heather was playing when she faded into the song. I knew it was a harmonizing note with the key of G where I started from. I play some one note progressions with slight delay on and in both services I had a bit of a time getting that key in my head to start the first lyrics. But hey, no one knew that but me. I missed playing that song.It was also a last-minute change.

One thing I was fretting about was I couldn’t see how the songs were gonna play together. I knew these were the songs we needed to be doing but they didn’t have a common theme. I think the common theme this morning was simply worshiping God. That was the only theme it needed.

I really am so proud of the growth our band is having. Everybody is stepping up and learning and trying new stuff and really being creative with their instruments. Today really was an awesome day just with great music, a sweet Spirit, and amazing message on labels by our Pastor and then spending some time with all the leaders in our first Xtreme Team Huddle.
