Jesus Is My Hobby

The other day, Pastor Carlo mentioned at church that some folks make Jesus their hobby rather than their life. Dang! This punched me in the face not because I’m one of those but because of the truth of it. Some folks DO make Jesus their hobby. I’m afraid the reason may lie in that we don’t seriously take the weight of life and it’s purpose for existing. Jesus is a fantastical entity that gives holy feel good bumps and a wish maker when desired. He’s there only when we need to feel like someone understands and listens to our cares. Truthfully, He is there. He never leaves us alone. There’s no where we can run where His spirit is not.

However, He doesn’t exist as a genie in a bottle catering to our every need and I’m afraid that’s where the gospel get’s lost in translation. Everything that was created, seen or unseen, was made by and for God (1 Colossians 1:16). We are all created for His glory. Unfortunately, when we all take our last breath, we will all have to stand before a holy God. Some of us who took serious the charge to love God and love others will be told that we were a good and faithful servant. Others will be told that he never knew them, to depart from Him.

I believe God is omniscient (Psalm 139). That ten-dollar word means God knows everything there is to know about everything. So how is it God will tell someone he never knew them? Because He never had a relationship with them simply because they treated Him as a hobby; something to pass the time away to feel better about themselves.

Don’t you dare be that guy!
