Servant Leadership

There are a handful of the same books that I read every year that I feel are conducive to me being a servant leader in the church.

  1. Spiritual Leadership – J. Oswald Sanders
  2. EntreLeadership – Dave Ramsey
  3. Following the River – Bob Sorge
  4. The Tale of Three Kings – Gene Edwards
  5. The Knowledge of the Holy – A.W. Tozer

As I was reading Spiritual Leadership, I was questioned with the term leader. I did a quick search and the word leader is mentioned in the KJV 3 times. The word servant  is mentioned 885 times. Some verses give us concrete evidence of what I believe God is trying to tell us:

  • “If any one wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all” (Mark 9:35).
  • “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. Because the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many”(Mark 10:42-45 par Luke 22:25-27)

I’m not trying to say that we should throw the word leader out of our church vernacular. The church needs leaders. However, I think it would do us leaders some good to give this some thought.
