Piper Devotion 1

In my Theology class this semester, we are having to read through John Piper’s devotional book Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ. I’ve decided that I would also blog my thoughts from this devotion.

Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare your glory.

The one thing that really spoke to me was that Piper stated the reason for such a large area of space and placing such a small creation such as humanity somewhere in it’s vastness so that we wouldn’t see ourselves in comparison to equal or lesser size creation but rather we would see how massive and glorious God is. Piper reiterates Psalm 19 in that the heavens declare His glory. In support of this is the idea that we don’t go to the Grand Canyon to reflect on ourselves but the glory and greatness of God or the canyons grandness and our insignificance. I believe God has ordained the large things to speak on His glory so that when we happen upon it, we are mesmerized at how small we are in comparison. One reason I love hiking so much is I get out of the man made structures and into the beauty of holiness if you will and begin to see the vastness and glory of God in His creative structure. Lastly Piper asks what is the purpose of or the endpoint of the Gospel. Is it redemption? Forgiveness? Justification? Reconciliation? Sanctification? Adoption? All these are good but it is more so so that we will see the Glory Jesus once had (John 17:24).

All this for His glory.
