Piper Devotion 2

In my Theology class this semester, we are having to read through John Piper’s devotional book Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ. I’ve decided that I would also blog my thoughts from this devotion.

John 8:58 – Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

As a human, we look to the past and remember, look at the present and see and look to the future and dream. To us, there is a beginning and an end. There was a time when we were born and a time when we will die but God has no time constraints. As He says in Revelation 22, He is the beginning and the end; He is the Alpha and Omega. There was never anything before Him nor will there ever be anything after Him and everything that is is made by Him, through Him and for Him. I was struck deeply by John 8:58 when Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” Not only was he putting himself on the same level as God the Father, he was also saying Abraham (and everyone else for that matter) has a time but in Him is no time. He always was, always is and always will be. This is what it means when He says He never changes. People change over time but in God is no time. Therefore, God is always who He is.
