Be You

I can’t write a song like Chris Tomlin – Write your song!

I can’t write a book like CS Lewis – Write your book!

I can’t speak like Billy Graham – Speak the words God gives you!

I can’t play like Babe Ruth – Play your game!

I can’t tell jokes like Bill Cosby – Tell your jokes!

I can’t love like Mother Theresa – Love as only you can!

I’m not good enough – Compared to whose goodness!

I’m not strong enough – Compared to whose strength!

I’m not smart enough – Compared to whose brilliance!

These are questions that kill me each morning I wake up. I’m not trying to preach I’m Ok – You’re Ok. We can all get better at the things we want to do but what I have to tell myself each morning is I’m not those guys and why am I comparing myself to anyone less than Jesus. It’s His righteousness that’s been given to me. I don’t have to be good enough. It’s His strength I’ve been afforded. I don’t have to be strong enough. It’s His wisdom imparted to me because He said he chose the foolish things of the earth to confound the wise.

I’m not immune to comparing myself to those in my life. I could go down the list and name so many people in my life that’s doing things better than I am so why even try.

My answer is because God gave me breath and a calling that is similar yet different from others because it’s for me.

I wonder… Do you feel the same comparisons in your life too?

One Response to Be You

  1. I often question who I am and if that’s a good thing. But I tell myself that I am who God has made me to be and he’s not done yet.

    Isaiah 64:8 (ESV)
But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
